STUDENT PLACE — PRIVACY POLICY

EFFECTIVE DATE: 6 October 2026

1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

This Privacy Policy explains how Student Place Limited ("Student Place", "we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, holds, discloses and deletes personal information when people use the Student Place platform (the "Platform").

This Privacy Policy applies to student users and, where relevant, people using Student Place on behalf of participating businesses.

Student Place does not sell personal information.

We handle personal information in accordance with applicable New Zealand privacy law.

2. INFORMATION WE COLLECT

The information Student Place collects depends on how you use the Platform.

Account information

When you create a student account, we may collect:

  • unique username;

  • email address;

  • password in hashed form;

  • optional referral code;

  • university or tertiary institution;

  • email-verification status and timestamp;

  • Terms-acceptance timestamp;

  • marketing-consent status; and

  • relevant account-security timestamps, such as when a password was changed.

Passwords are hashed and are not stored by Student Place in readable plain-text form.

Student verification information

When you complete student verification, we collect:

  • full legal name;

  • student ID number; and

  • a photograph of your student ID card.

Student verification may be skipped during initial registration and completed later. Certain Platform functionality may depend on verification being completed.

Rewards and account information

We may maintain information associated with your Student Place account including:

  • StuDollar balance;

  • tier and tier progress;

  • recorded savings;

  • badges;

  • recent balance history;

  • friend relationships or status; and

  • referral relationships.

Transaction information

When you use Student Place at a participating business, we may record information including:

  • the participating business;

  • your Student Place account or username;

  • purchase amount;

  • StuDollars awarded;

  • discount applied;

  • tier information;

  • transaction date; and

  • associated transaction records.

Student Place does not process the underlying payment and does not collect your card number, CVV, bank-account information or other payment credentials.

Platform interaction information

Student Place may record interactions necessary to operate and understand Platform functionality, including event saves, event views, event clicks and business clicks.

Student Place does not currently use third-party analytics or advertising-tracking platforms to analyse this activity.

Information you provide to us

We may also collect information that you voluntarily provide when you:

  • contact Student Place;

  • provide feedback;

  • participate in a promotion or competition;

  • make a privacy request; or

  • otherwise communicate with us about your account or use of the Platform.

3. STUDENT ID VERIFICATION AND AUTOMATED PROCESSING

Student Place uses automated technology to assist with verifying student status.

When you submit a photograph of your student ID, Google Gemini 2.5 Flash is used to compare the information shown on the ID with the full legal name and student ID number you have entered.

The purpose of this processing is to determine whether the submitted information appears to correspond with the student ID provided and to assist Student Place in confirming student eligibility.

Student ID photographs are not used for advertising, profiling or unrelated purposes.

Successful verification

Where verification is successful, the uploaded student ID photograph is deleted from Student Place's database following the verification process.

Student Place retains the verification result and other account information required to record that student verification has been completed.

Unsuccessful verification

Where a verification attempt is unsuccessful, the submitted student ID photograph may currently be retained to enable the verification process to be retried.

Student Place aims to retain identification information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.

If an account containing a retained student ID photograph is deleted, that photograph is deleted as part of the account-deletion process.

Google Gemini 2.5 Flash is currently the only artificial-intelligence service Student Place uses to process student ID photographs for verification.

4. HOW WE USE PERSONAL INFORMATION

Student Place may use personal information to:

  • create and administer accounts;

  • verify email addresses;

  • verify student status;

  • authenticate and secure accounts;

  • operate referral and friend functionality;

  • record transactions reported through participating businesses;

  • calculate StuDollars, tiers, discounts and rewards;

  • operate the Student Place leaderboard;

  • maintain the in-app notifications feed;

  • provide account and service communications;

  • send marketing communications where the user has chosen to receive them;

  • administer promotions and competitions;

  • provide participating businesses with relevant transaction information and analytics;

  • investigate suspected fraud, misuse or security issues;

  • correct transaction and reward errors;

  • respond to enquiries, complaints and privacy requests;

  • operate, maintain and improve the Platform; and

  • comply with applicable legal obligations.

Student Place will not use personal information for a materially different purpose unless permitted by applicable law or, where required, we have obtained appropriate authorisation.

5. INFORMATION VISIBLE TO OTHER STUDENTS

Certain information associated with your Student Place account may be visible to other Student Place users.

Depending on the relevant feature, this may include:

  • username;

  • university;

  • StuDollar balance;

  • savings;

  • tier;

  • tier progress;

  • recent balance history;

  • badges; and

  • friend status.

Your full legal name is not displayed on your normal student profile.

Your email address is not displayed on your normal profile, although it may appear in friend-search functionality.

Leaderboard

Student Place's leaderboard may display information about the top 50 students, including:

  • username;

  • university;

  • StuDollar balance;

  • tier;

  • rank; and

  • badges.

The leaderboard does not display students' full legal names.

Student Place does not currently operate a public community feed allowing students to upload public posts, photos, captions or comments.

6. INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPATING BUSINESSES

When you transact with a participating business using Student Place, that business may access information associated with the relevant transaction.

The business-facing transaction information currently includes:

  • your Student Place username;

  • your tier;

  • discount applied;

  • purchase amount;

  • StuDollars awarded; and

  • transaction date.

Student Place does not provide your full legal name, student ID number or email address to participating businesses through the business transaction endpoint.

Participating businesses may also receive aggregated analytics relating to activity through their Student Place business account.

Participating businesses do not have unrestricted access to Student Place user information. Information made available to a business is limited to information relevant to its use of Student Place and its interactions with Student Place users.

7. PAYMENTS AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Student Place does not process payments for purchases made from participating businesses.

Students pay participating businesses directly.

A participating business may scan the student's Student Place QR code and enter or confirm the purchase amount so that Student Place can record the transaction and calculate StuDollars, tier progress, discounts and other applicable benefits.

Student Place does not collect or store users':

  • payment-card numbers;

  • CVVs;

  • bank-account numbers; or

  • other payment credentials

as part of this process.

8. INFORMATION WE DO NOT CURRENTLY COLLECT

Student Place does not currently collect through the Platform:

  • users' GPS location;

  • precise or approximate device location;

  • phone contacts;

  • device identifiers;

  • IP addresses for analytics purposes;

  • app-version information for analytics purposes;

  • user-agent strings for analytics purposes;

  • login timestamps for analytics purposes;

  • crash logs; or

  • operating-system-level push-notification tokens.

Student Place does not currently use:

  • Google Analytics;

  • Meta Pixel;

  • PostHog;

  • Mixpanel;

  • Sentry;

  • Firebase Analytics; or

  • similar third-party analytics or advertising-tracking services.

If Student Place materially changes these practices, this Privacy Policy will be updated as appropriate.

9. CAMERA AND PHOTO-LIBRARY ACCESS

Student Place may request access to your device camera or photo library so that you can take or select a photograph of your student ID for student verification.

Student Place does not currently use camera or photo-library access for public profile photographs or community posts.

10. SERVICE PROVIDERS AND OVERSEAS PROCESSING

Student Place uses third-party service providers to operate parts of the Platform.

Current relevant providers include:

  • Emergent — backend/platform infrastructure;

  • Resend — email delivery; and

  • Google Gemini 2.5 Flash — automated processing of student ID photographs for student verification.

These providers may process personal information on Student Place's behalf where necessary to provide their respective services.

Student Place does not currently use Lovable.ai to operate the Platform.

Some service providers may process or store information using infrastructure located outside New Zealand.

Where New Zealand privacy law applies to overseas processing or disclosure, Student Place will take reasonable steps to ensure that personal information is handled in accordance with applicable requirements.

11. MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

Receiving Student Place marketing communications is optional.

During registration, you may choose whether you wish to receive promotional communications from Student Place.

Marketing consent is not enabled by default, and you do not need to consent to marketing in order to create or use a Student Place account.

Student Place sends marketing communications only where the relevant marketing-consent requirements have been satisfied.

If you have chosen to receive marketing communications, you may withdraw your consent or unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe functionality provided.

Withdrawing marketing consent does not delete your Student Place account.

Student Place may still send non-promotional communications reasonably necessary to:

  • operate your account;

  • complete verification;

  • provide security information;

  • communicate significant service changes; or

  • provide important legal or administrative notices.

12. IN-APP NOTIFICATIONS

Student Place currently operates an in-app notifications feed.

The Platform periodically checks for notifications associated with your account.

Student Place does not currently send operating-system-level push notifications and does not currently collect device push-notification tokens.

13. STORAGE, SECURITY AND RETENTION

Student Place takes reasonable safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information it holds to protect personal information against loss, unauthorised access, misuse, modification or disclosure.

No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security.

Student Place retains personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected or for another purpose permitted by law.

Student ID photographs associated with successful verification are deleted following successful verification.

Where a verification attempt is unsuccessful, the photograph may currently be retained for the purpose of retrying verification and is deleted when the relevant account is deleted.

Other personal information may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to operate an active account and meet legitimate operational, security, dispute-resolution, fraud-prevention or legal requirements.

14. ACCOUNT DELETION AND ANONYMISATION

You can initiate deletion of your Student Place account through the account settings within the Platform.

When your account is deleted, Student Place deletes personal account information associated with the account, including:

  • your profile;

  • StuDollar balance;

  • notifications;

  • badges;

  • referral records; and

  • any student ID photograph retained by Student Place.

You are also removed from other users' friend lists.

Certain historical transaction and Platform-interaction records are retained for business reporting and historical Platform records.

When your account is deleted, Student Place removes your student identifier from retained:

  • purchase records;

  • event-save records;

  • event-view records;

  • event-click records; and

  • business-click records.

The identifier is replaced with a non-identifying deleted-user reference.

These retained records are therefore no longer linked to your Student Place account.

Student Place may retain information that has been anonymised so that it no longer identifies you.

15. ACCESS AND CORRECTION

You may request access to personal information Student Place holds about you and may ask Student Place to correct personal information you believe is inaccurate.

Student Place may need to verify your identity before responding to a request.

If Student Place does not make a correction you have requested, you may have additional rights under New Zealand privacy law, including the ability in applicable circumstances to request that a statement of the correction sought be attached to the information.

16. MINORS AND ALCOHOL-RELATED CONTENT

Student Place does not currently impose a general minimum age for account registration.

If you are under 18, we encourage you to involve a parent or guardian when using Student Place.

Student Place may display participating businesses, promotions or offers relating to alcohol.

The display of an alcohol-related business, product or offer does not mean that a user is legally eligible to purchase alcohol.

Student Place does not itself sell or supply alcohol through the Platform.

Participating businesses remain responsible for verifying age and complying with applicable licensing and sale-of-alcohol requirements.

17. PROMOTIONS AND COMPETITIONS

Student Place may occasionally run promotions, giveaways or competitions.

If you participate, Student Place may collect information reasonably necessary to:

  • administer the promotion;

  • verify eligibility;

  • communicate with participants;

  • select or verify winners; and

  • provide prizes.

Additional terms and privacy information may apply to individual promotions.

18. DISCLOSURE REQUIRED OR PERMITTED BY LAW

Student Place may disclose personal information where required or permitted by law, including where reasonably necessary and legally permitted to:

  • investigate fraud or misuse;

  • address security incidents;

  • protect the rights or safety of Student Place, its users or participating businesses; or

  • respond to a lawful request from an authorised public authority.

If you have a privacy concern or complaint, please contact Student Place so that we can investigate and respond.

20. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

Student Place may update this Privacy Policy as the Platform develops or where our privacy practices or legal obligations change.

Where a change is material, we will take reasonable steps to notify users through the Platform, email or another appropriate method.

The current version of this Privacy Policy will display its effective date.
